What Outgoing Octopus is
Outgoing Octopus (Fixed) is a flat-rate Smart Export Guarantee tariff: one pence-per-kWh figure for every unit your solar system sends back to the grid, whatever time of day it happens. It is the simplest of Octopus's export products - no bands, no wholesale tracking, one number.
It was cut from 15p/kWh to 12p/kWh on 1 March 2026, which is the genuine news hook behind a lot of the current search interest in this tariff: existing customers on the old rate moved to the new one, and anyone comparing export tariffs today should know the number has moved. Octopus also runs Prime Outgoing (16p peak / 9p off-peak, time-banded) and Agile Outgoing (fully dynamic, tracking wholesale prices) as separate, related products - see the FAQ below for how they differ.
The rate, as checked today
flat rate 12p/kWh exported
A single flat rate, no time bands. Cut from 15p/kWh on 1 March 2026.

Who can get it
- A smart meter capable of providing half-hourly export data (almost all SMETS2 meters and most SMETS1 meters, per Octopus's own page)
- Must be an Octopus Energy customer
- Cannot have received Feed-in Tariff payments in the last 12 months
- Can only be combined with certain Octopus import tariffs (Octopus's own page does not name the full list)
Who it suits: A solar household, with or without a battery, that wants a simple, predictable export rate rather than tracking a dynamic price every half hour. It is a sensible default for anyone who does not want to actively manage export timing.
Does this pair with a Clearline installation?
Yes, in principle. Octopus does not require the solar installation to have been carried out by Octopus itself for Outgoing; a system installed by our MCS-certified, fully insured teams can qualify a household for this rate.
Every installation is carried out by our teams, who hold:
How Outgoing pairs with each route
Solar
The core use case: any exporting solar system can be paired with Outgoing, with or without a battery.
Battery
A battery adds a decision on top of Outgoing's flat rate: because every exported unit pays the same 12p regardless of time, there is no timing incentive to hold export back for a peak window the way there is on Flux. A battery mainly earns its keep here by shifting your own import to cheaper hours (see the worked example below), with export income on top.
EV charging
No direct interaction - Outgoing only prices what you export, not what you import for charging. Pair it with a separate EV import tariff such as Intelligent Octopus Go if EV charging cost is the priority.
Heat pump
Same point as EV: Outgoing has no import side, so it says nothing about heat-pump running costs. Octopus's own recommended pairing for a heat-pump household exporting solar is Cosy Octopus (import) plus Outgoing (export) - see the Cosy Octopus page for that combination.
What 12p/kWh does to payback
Outgoing's 12p/kWh is a real, published rate, so this table runs it through the same solar-and-battery model used on every county page on this site: a standard 12-panel, 6.36 kWp system, national mean yield, 2,700 kWh typical household use.
| Package | System, installed | Export income, year one | Total year one benefit | Simple payback |
|---|---|---|---|---|
Solar only | £6,360 | £594 | £840 | 7.6 yrs |
Solar + Duracell Dura16 | £10,810 | £594 | £1,134 | 9.5 yrs |
Solar + Tesla Powerwall 3 | £12,710 | £594 | £1,134 | 11.2 yrs |

Octopus Energy Outgoing questions, answered
How much does Outgoing Octopus pay for exported solar?
12p/kWh, checked directly against Octopus's own tariff page today. That is a flat rate applied to every exported unit at any time of day.
Was Outgoing Octopus cut from 15p?
Yes. Octopus reduced the fixed Outgoing rate from 15p/kWh to 12p/kWh on 1 March 2026. Anyone quoting the old 15p figure is out of date.
What is the difference between Outgoing, Prime Outgoing and Agile Outgoing?
Outgoing (Fixed) pays one flat rate, 12p/kWh as checked today. Prime Outgoing is time-banded: 16p/kWh from 4pm to 7pm and 9p/kWh the rest of the day, also fixed. Agile Outgoing has no fixed rate at all; it tracks half-hourly wholesale prices, uncapped, so it can pay more or less than either fixed option depending on the day.
Do I need a battery to get the Outgoing rate?
No. Outgoing pays on export alone; a battery is not a condition of the tariff. A battery changes how much you have left to export and how much of your own import you avoid, which is a separate piece of the maths - see the worked example above.
Can a Clearline installation qualify for Outgoing Octopus?
Yes, in principle. Octopus does not require the solar system to have been installed by Octopus itself; the conditions are a compatible smart meter, being an Octopus customer, and no recent Feed-in Tariff payments.
Is Outgoing Octopus better than a dynamic export tariff?
It depends on how your solar exports through the day and how much attention you want to pay it. A flat rate is predictable and needs no management; a dynamic tariff can pay more on volatile days but can also pay less, and rewards households who can shift export timing. The comparison is arithmetic on your own generation pattern, which is what the design call works out.
