What Cosy Octopus is

Cosy Octopus is Octopus's import tariff built specifically around a heat pump's heating pattern, rather than the simple overnight-only window most EV tariffs use. Instead of one cheap block at night, Cosy splits the day into three off-peak windows - early morning, early afternoon and late evening - which line up with when a heat pump or hot water cylinder can usefully pre-heat, plus a single, shorter peak window in the early evening when the rate rises.

It is an electricity-only, import-only tariff. Cosy Octopus has no export or outgoing rate of its own, so a household with solar as well as a heat pump needs a second tariff for what the panels send back to the grid - Octopus's own recommendation is to pair Cosy with Outgoing Octopus (Fixed or Agile), which this page cross-links below.

The rate, as checked today

  • Off-peak window 1, 04:00-07:00 - part of three windows priced roughly 51% below the tariff's own Day rate
  • Off-peak window 2, 13:00-16:00 - same relative discount as the other two off-peak windows
  • Off-peak window 3, 22:00-00:00 - same relative discount as the other two off-peak windows
  • Peak window, 16:00-19:00 - roughly 50% above the Day rate

Octopus's own page states the off-peak windows at roughly 51% cheaper than Cosy's Day rate and the peak window at roughly 50% above it, but does not publish a national pence-per-kWh figure for the Day rate itself - that varies by region and is shown by postcode. We have therefore not converted the percentages into a pound-and-pence figure that would imply a national rate that does not exist.

Who can get it

  • A heat pump, electric radiator or electric boiler at the property, per Octopus's own eligibility wording
  • A SMETS2, or compatible Secure SMETS1, smart meter
  • Must be an Octopus Energy customer

Who it suits: A household with a heat pump (or electric boiler or electric radiators) that can pre-heat the home or hot water cylinder inside Cosy's three off-peak windows, and can avoid running the heating hard through the 4pm-7pm peak window.

The Clearline honesty check

Does this pair with a Clearline installation?

Yes. Cosy Octopus carries no installation condition tied to who fitted the heat pump; having our MCS-certified, fully insured teams install it does not affect eligibility for this tariff.

How it fits

How Cosy pairs with each route

Solar

No direct interaction on the import side, but a solar household on Cosy still needs an export tariff: Octopus's stated pairing is Outgoing Octopus (Fixed or Agile) for whatever the panels send back to the grid, alongside Cosy for what the home imports.

Battery

A battery adds flexibility Cosy's fixed windows don't otherwise offer: pre-charging in one of the three off-peak windows and discharging through the peak window, in addition to whatever the heat pump itself is doing.

EV charging

Cosy has no EV-specific scheduling; the three off-peak windows still apply to a car plugged in during any of them, but a household charging a car regularly may prefer a tariff built around EV charging specifically, run alongside Cosy for the heating load.

Heat pump

The core use case. Cosy's three off-peak windows are explicitly timed to a heat pump's typical heating pattern - overnight into early morning, an early-afternoon top-up, and a pre-peak evening window - rather than the single overnight block most EV tariffs use.

Illustrative worked example

Shifting 10 kWh off-peak, illustratively

Octopus states the off-peak windows at roughly 51% below Cosy's own Day rate, but does not publish that Day rate nationally, so we have not built a pound figure from it. Instead, the table below applies the same illustrative method used across this site's calculators: the site's own off-peak assumption (8p/kWh) against the current Ofgem price cap unit rate (26.32p/kWh, Oct-Dec 2026) as an illustrative before-and-after for shifting a unit of heating demand into an off-peak window.

Illustrative cost of 10 kWh at the standard rate versus an off-peak rate
ScenarioRateCost, 10 kWh
At the current price cap unit rate
26.32p/kWh
£3
At the site's illustrative off-peak rate

Illustrative saving on this 10 kWh: £2. Illustrative only, not Cosy's own published rate. We confirm Cosy's actual Day rate and off-peak figures for your postcode on your free design call.

FAQs

Octopus Energy Cosy questions, answered

What is Cosy Octopus?

An import-only electricity tariff built around a heat pump's heating pattern: three cheaper windows through the day (early morning, early afternoon, late evening) and one peak window in the early evening, checked directly against Octopus's own page today.

Does Cosy Octopus pay for solar export?

No. Octopus's own page describes Cosy as an electricity-only tariff with no export component. A solar household on Cosy needs a separate export tariff, most commonly Outgoing Octopus, which Octopus's own materials recommend pairing it with.

Do I need a heat pump to join Cosy Octopus?

Yes, or an electric boiler or electric radiators, per Octopus's own eligibility wording. It is built around that kind of heating load, not a general-purpose off-peak tariff.

What are Cosy Octopus's off-peak windows?

Three windows: 04:00-07:00, 13:00-16:00 and 22:00-00:00, checked today at roughly 51% below the tariff's Day rate. There is one peak window, 16:00-19:00, at roughly 50% above the Day rate.

How much does Cosy Octopus actually cost per kWh?

Octopus does not publish a single national Day rate for Cosy; it is shown by postcode. We have not converted the published percentage discounts into a national pence figure that would misrepresent a regional rate as a fixed one.

Can a Clearline installation qualify for Cosy Octopus?

Yes. Cosy carries no condition on who installed the heat pump; eligibility depends on having the right kind of heating and a compatible smart meter.

Takes about two minutes. We call or text within one working day to book your free 30-minute video design call at a time that suits you. We design it around your roof and your numbers, and our MCS-certified, fully insured installation teams install it.

Installations can only go ahead for homeowners, as the system is fixed to the property. Do carry on if you own it, or you are about to.
Flats and apartments usually share a roof, which rules most installations out. Send your details anyway and we will tell you honestly what is possible.
