EV Charging

Home EV charging: the cheapest miles you will ever buy happen overnight.

A home charger is only half the answer. The other half is the tariff behind it: EV tariffs checked in August 2026 offered overnight rates from around 8p per kWh, a fraction of standard daytime rates.

Charger plus tariff

Buy the charger once. Choose the tariff well.

Most home charging happens overnight, so the difference between a standard rate and a dedicated EV tariff compounds every single week you own the car.

Smart chargers schedule charging into the cheap window automatically, and intelligent tariffs go further by managing the schedule for you. As checked in August 2026, Octopus Energy's Intelligent Octopus Go advertised off-peak rates from around 8p per kWh with a guaranteed overnight window, and other suppliers offer competing EV rates; see the tariff guide for the comparison and conditions.

Got solar, or thinking about it? Surplus generation can charge the car during the day, and the design call covers how charger, battery and panels fit together rather than treating each as a separate purchase.

FAQs

EV Charging questions, answered

Do I need off-street parking for a home charger?

A driveway or garage makes it straightforward. Without one, options narrow considerably and depend on your council’s approach to cross-pavement solutions, so tell us your situation honestly and we will do the same in return.

What speed of charger do homes actually get?

Most UK homes install a 7kW charger, which suits a single-phase supply and comfortably refills a typical EV overnight. Faster home charging generally needs a three-phase supply, which is rare in existing housing.

Can solar panels charge my car?

Yes, surplus solar can be diverted to the car during the day, and some chargers manage that automatically. Whether it beats exporting that energy depends on your export rate, which is exactly the kind of question the design call settles.

Takes about two minutes. We work out your options, then confirm your free remote design call, on video, at a time that suits you. It starts with your roof and your numbers, and the design is built around them rather than around a product someone needs to shift.

Installations can only go ahead for homeowners, as the system is fixed to the property. Do carry on if you own it, or you are about to.
Flats and apartments usually share a roof, which rules most installations out. Send your details anyway and we will tell you honestly what is possible.
