Most home charging happens overnight, so the gap between a standard rate and an EV tariff compounds every week you own the car.
Smart chargers schedule charging into the cheap window automatically. Checked on 25 September 2026, Intelligent Octopus Go charges 8p per kWh off-peak from 1 October 2026 (8.4p until then). On 21 September 2026, E.ON Next Drive Smart listed 8.5p per kWh between midnight and 6am.

Budget update: EV charging
Announced in the 28 October 2026 Budget: legislation will clarify that electricity from publicly accessible and workplace charge points is charged 20% VAT, effective 1 November 2026. Electric vehicle excise duty (eVED), first announced at Budget 2025, starts on 1 April 2028 at 3p a mile for battery electric vehicles and 1.5p for plug-in hybrids. How much does a home EV charger cost?
A 7.4 kW smart wall charger is from £1,100 installed. The final price depends on the cable run from your consumer unit and any upgrade your supply needs, which the survey confirms before you commit.
Is there a grant for a home charger?
If you rent, or own and live in a flat, the government's EV chargepoint grant pays 75% of the cost of buying and installing a socket, up to £500, until 31 March 2027. You need an eligible EV and private off-street parking.
Do I need off-street parking for a home charger?
A driveway or garage makes it straightforward. Without one, options narrow considerably and depend on your council’s approach to cross-pavement solutions, so tell us your situation honestly and we will do the same in return.
What speed of charger do homes actually get?
Most UK homes install a 7kW charger, which suits a single-phase supply and comfortably refills a typical EV overnight. Faster home charging generally needs a three-phase supply, which is rare in existing housing.
Can solar panels charge my car?
