Export rate questions, answered
What is the best SEG tariff right now?
There is no single answer that fits everyone. The highest all-day rate we checked was Good Energy's Solar Savings Exclusive at 25p/kWh, and it needs solar and a battery fitted through Good Energy. The highest all-day rate that does not need the supplier to fit your system is 13p/kWh (E.ON Next Export Exclusive v3), and its conditions are in the tables on this page. The standard Smart Export Guarantee tariffs open to a household on any supplier run from 1.05p to 6p/kWh. Weigh the number against what it requires, not the headline alone.
Do you need a smart meter for the Smart Export Guarantee?
Usually, but the rule is about what the meter can do, not what it is called. Ofgem's generator guidance (paragraph 1.17) requires the export to be metered by a meter capable of half-hourly measurements, with an export MPAN. It does not name a smart meter specifically. Most suppliers ask for a smart meter; Scottish Power accepts 'smart, AMR, or similar' and EDF accepts quarterly manual export readings where the meter cannot send half-hourly data.
Can you export solar without a battery?
Yes, on most tariffs. Of the 35 live tariffs we checked, only 3 make a battery a condition of the rate: Octopus Energy's Flux, Good Energy's Solar Savings Exclusive, E.ON Next's Solar Storage Steady (beta). Every other live tariff on this page pays on solar export alone.
Do you have to be an import customer of the same supplier?
It depends on the tariff. 10 of the 35 live tariffs are open whoever supplies your electricity, including the standard Smart Export Guarantee tariffs; several others, mostly the higher rates, do require your electricity import to be with the same supplier. The conditions column in the tables on this page states it for each one, since it changes tariff by tariff rather than following one rule.
How is SEG paid?
Ofgem's rules set no fixed payment interval, so each supplier reads your export meter and pays on its own schedule, which its tariff page states. Scottish Power says it pays within 90 days, Outfox Energy says it pays quarterly. Any SEG tariff rate offered must always be above zero pence per kWh: Ofgem sets no minimum rate above that, and suppliers set their own rate, contract length and other terms.
Which suppliers have to offer a Smart Export Guarantee tariff?
Ofgem's list for the 1 April 2026 to 31 March 2027 SEG year names 12 mandatory licensees: British Gas Trading Limited; E (Gas and Electricity) Ltd; E.ON Next Energy Limited; EDF Energy Customers Limited; Electricity Plus Supply Limited (trading as Utility Warehouse); Foxglove Energy Supply Limited (trades as Outfox Energy); Fuse Energy Supply Limited; Octopus Energy Limited; OVO Electricity Ltd; ScottishPower Energy Retail Limited; So Energy Trading Limited; Utilita Energy Limited. 4 more are voluntary licensees: Pozitive Energy Ltd; Ruby Electricity Ltd; Smart Pay Energy Ltd; Voltx Power Ltd. Good Energy is not on either list for 2026-27; its Solar Savings tariffs are export tariffs outside the SEG obligation list.
