Heat pumps run best at lower flow temperatures than a gas boiler, which makes insulation, radiator sizing and your home's heat loss part of the conversation from the start. A good survey answers those before anyone talks price.

How it works
Heat from the outside air
The outdoor unit draws heat from the outside air, even on a cold day, and a compressor raises it to a temperature your radiators and hot water can use.
Because it moves heat rather than burning fuel, a heat pump delivers more heat energy than the electricity it uses. How much more depends on the flow temperature your home needs, which is why the heat-loss survey matters more than the brochure.
Solar panels can cover part of the electricity it uses, and a battery can shift the rest into cheaper hours. The design call looks at the whole house, not one box.

How much is the Boiler Upgrade Scheme grant?
£7,500 towards an air source or ground source heat pump and £2,500 towards an air-to-air heat pump, in England and Wales. A home heated by oil or LPG with no mains gas can get an extra £1,500 towards an air or ground source heat pump until March 2027. Figures from gov.uk, checked 28 September 2026.
Do heat pumps work in cold weather?
Yes. They are the dominant heating technology in countries far colder than Britain. Efficiency falls as temperatures drop, which is why correct sizing for your home’s heat loss matters more than headline figures.
Do I need to replace my radiators?
Sometimes some of them. Heat pumps run at lower flow temperatures, so a few radiators may need to be larger to deliver the same warmth. A proper heat-loss survey identifies exactly which, before you commit to anything.
Is my home suitable for a heat pump?
Most homes can be made suitable; the honest question is at what cost. Insulation, space for the outdoor unit and a hot water cylinder all play in, and that suitability conversation is exactly what the free design call is for.
