How Telford compares

Telford is one of 9 Shropshire towns we track, and it ranks 5th of 9 for solar yield. The House of Commons Library settlement data classes it as a large town of 164,570 people. At 962 kWh per kWp a year, a typical 12 panel system here pays for itself in around 7.3 years on the 12p scenario: £868 of year one benefit against £6,360 of installed hardware, £247 of that benefit from cutting 26.32p imports with your own generation.

Treat these as calibration rather than a quote. The calculator below runs the same model, defaulted to Telford's own yield, and at Telford's 962 kWh per kWp it prices a 12 panel system at £6,360 installed before any battery. Your free design call reworks every number for your actual roof, its shading and your usage.

Telford sits within Telford and Wrekin, its local planning authority, and the House of Commons Library classes it as a large town.

A 12 panel, 6.36 kWp system in Telford generates around 6,118 kWh a year, worth around £868 in year one on the 12p export scenario.

Generation is modelled from PVGIS satellite data for Telford's own coordinates (52.68394, -2.46632), using the same 26.32p/kWh import value and £1,000 per kWp installed pricing as every Clearline estimate, with the full methodology, sourcing and assumptions set out on our help page.

Local detail

Local detail for Telford

Telford was designated a new town in 1968, extending the earlier Dawley New Town of 1963, and most of its housing was built from the late 1960s through the early 1990s, starting with the Sutton Hill estate in 1967. That means Telford's roofs are mostly post-1968 new-town stock rather than older Victorian terraces, typically giving more consistent, lower-density layouts with modern roof forms and fewer of the shading and access problems that come with a Victorian terrace row.

Telford sits in National Grid Electricity Distribution territory, on its West Midlands licence. National Grid Electricity Distribution's own published Guaranteed Standard is 45 working days for a low voltage generation quotation, with a complete application acknowledged within 10 working days; most single home systems use the quicker 28-day G98 route instead. Telford and Wrekin Council is the planning authority, with eight conservation areas including Wellington, Newport and the Severn Gorge.

The council declared a Climate Emergency on 25 July 2019 and has committed to carbon neutrality for its own operations by 2030, one of the earlier declarations among the councils Clearline covers. It has already fitted a 37.4kW solar system at Oakengates Theatre, expected to generate around 33,540kWh a year, and new Nuplace housing at Southwater Way and Granville, Donnington is being built with solar panels fitted as standard from day one.

FAQs

Common questions about solar in Telford

What could a roof in Telford generate?

PVGIS puts a roof in Telford at 962 kWh per kWp a year, 2.63 peak sun hours a day averaged across the seasons.

What does a typical solar system cost in Telford?

A typical 12 panel, 6.36 kWp system in Telford costs around £6,360 installed, at £1,000 per kWp before any battery.

Would a system in Telford need a G99 application?

Most home solar and battery systems qualify for the simpler G98 notification, made to the network operator (DNO) after installation rather than before. A minority, usually larger systems, need the fuller G99 process instead. Your design call checks which applies in Telford before anything is booked; our G98 vs G99 guide explains the difference in full.

What could I earn from exporting in Telford?

On the 12p export scenario, that 12 panel system sends about 5,182 kWh a year to the grid, worth around £622. The tariff guide compares the export rates that could apply to your setup.

Installations can only go ahead for homeowners, as the system is fixed to the property. Do carry on if you own it, or you are about to.
Flats and apartments usually share a roof, which rules most installations out. Send your details anyway and we will tell you honestly what is possible.
