Half of UK homes are quoted module-level electronics they do not need, and the other half are quoted a bare string inverter on a roof that will punish them for it. The deciding factor is your roof, not the brochure.

The answer in one paragraph
If your roof is a single clear plane facing one direction with no chimney, no dormer and no trees, a plain string inverter is the right call and anything else is money spent on a problem you do not have. If your array spans two or three orientations, or something casts a shadow across part of it for a chunk of the day, module-level electronics pay for themselves. Everything below is why.
How the three approaches differ
String inverter
All the panels are wired in series into one central inverter. It is the cheapest and simplest arrangement, and it has one structural weakness: a series string performs at the level of its weakest panel. One shaded module drags the whole string down with it.
DC power optimisers
A small DC to DC unit sits behind each panel and conditions that panel's output before sending power on to a central inverter. You get panel-level monitoring and much better shade tolerance than a bare string, at less cost than full microinverters.
Microinverters
A small inverter behind every panel converts DC to AC at the module itself. Each panel operates completely independently, so shading or a failure on one panel does not affect the rest of the array. It is the most expensive approach and the most tolerant of awkward roofs.

The choice hinges on the roof, not the brand
An unshaded single-orientation roof is well served by a string inverter. A complex multi-aspect or shaded roof justifies module-level electronics. Nobody can answer this from a postcode and a bill, which is exactly why a design call looks at your roof before recommending anything.

Two details in that table are worth pulling out. The Tigo TS4-A-O supports selective deployment, meaning you can optimise only the panels that are actually shaded instead of buying a unit for every module. And the Tigo 25-year warranty is conditional on the system being internet-connected with monitoring active. Without that, it drops to five years.
The 2026 nuance nobody mentions on the doorstep
Some modern back-contact panels now handle partial shade better on their own. The Longi Hi-MO X10 uses a cell-level shading design that bypasses individual shaded cells rather than dropping a whole section of the module. That genuinely weakens the blanket pitch that any shade at all requires optimisers on every panel.
It does not eliminate the case for module-level electronics. It does mean that a quote which specifies both a shade-tolerant back-contact panel and a full set of optimisers should be questioned, and that panel choice and inverter architecture need deciding together rather than in sequence. Monitoring is a real benefit, not just a gadget
Panel-level monitoring is what tells you a single module has failed rather than leaving you to notice a vague drop in output three years later. On a large array or an awkward roof that visibility has genuine value, separate from the shade argument.
Where the battery fits
If you want storage now or later, the more useful question is whether the inverter is a hybrid. A hybrid string inverter handles the panels and the battery in one unit, which is generally the cleanest and cheapest route for a UK home. Microinverter systems take a different path to storage, and that is a design decision worth making at the start rather than bolting on. Our battery storage guide covers the trade-offs.
Whichever architecture you pick, the inverter AC rating is what your Distribution Network Operator cares about, not how many panels you have. That threshold decides whether your job is a simple notification or a formal application, which we set out in G98 versus G99.
How to work out which you need
Map the shade, not the roof
Stand in the garden at 9am, 1pm and 5pm on a clear day and note what falls across the roof. Chimneys, dormers, satellite dishes and the neighbour's conifer are the usual offenders.
Count the orientations
One plane means one string behaves consistently. Two or three planes facing different ways means the panels will peak at different times, which is a case for module-level control.
Ask what the panel already does
If the quote specifies a back-contact module with cell-level shade handling, the marginal value of optimisers on unshaded panels is small.
Price the selective option
An add-on optimiser can be fitted to only the affected panels. Compare that against a full set before accepting an all-or-nothing quote.

Are solar optimisers worth it?
On a shaded or multi-aspect roof, yes, because a plain series string performs at the level of its weakest panel and optimisers stop one module dragging the rest down. On a clear single-orientation roof the benefit is mostly panel-level monitoring rather than extra generation. Ask what problem the optimisers on your quote are solving before paying for them.
Are microinverters better than a string inverter?
They are more tolerant, not universally better. Each panel operates independently, so shading or a failure on one does not affect the rest, which is genuinely valuable on complex roofs. They also cost the most, and on a clear roof that money buys more generation if spent on additional panels instead.
Can I add optimisers to only some panels?
With an add-on optimiser like the Tigo TS4-A-O, yes. It is inverter-brand agnostic and supports selective deployment, so it can be fitted to only the modules that are actually affected. A system optimiser such as the SolarEdge S-series works differently and requires a matching SolarEdge inverter.
Do optimisers and microinverters last as long as the panels?
Both Enphase IQ8 microinverters and SolarEdge S-series optimisers carry 25-year warranties, which is in the same territory as panel product warranties. Some warranties are conditional: Tigo's 25-year term applies when the system is internet-connected with monitoring, and drops to five years otherwise. Read the condition, not just the headline number.
What is a hybrid inverter?
It is a string inverter that also manages a battery, handling solar generation, charging and discharging in one unit. For a UK home planning storage now or later, it is usually the simplest and cheapest route. Fox ESS and Sunsynk are the most commonly fitted hybrid brands in 2026, with Fronius and SolarEdge in the premium tier.
Does shade mean I should not bother with solar?
Rarely. It means the design needs to account for it, either through module-level electronics, panel choice, or simply placing panels where the shade is not. A design call that looks at your actual roof will tell you whether the shaded area is worth populating at all.
