What MCS certification actually is, and why your export payments depend on it
MCS is the badge that decides whether your solar panels earn you money for the electricity you send back to the grid. It certifies the product, the installation team and the finished installation, and it cannot be added afterwards.

The short answer
MCS stands for the Microgeneration Certification Scheme. It is the UK's quality mark for small scale renewable energy systems, covering solar PV, solar heating, heat pumps, biomass, battery storage, small wind and micro-CHP. It does two jobs at once: it sets the technical standards, and it provides consumer protection.

The part that matters most to your wallet is narrower than that. To claim Smart Export Guarantee payments on a solar PV installation of 50kW or less, that installation must hold a valid MCS certificate, or certification under a scheme accredited as equivalent. No certificate, no export income.
The certificate is the money
A cheap quote from a non certified installation team does not just cost you a quality benchmark. It locks you out of Smart Export Guarantee payments for the life of the system, and MCS cannot be granted retrospectively. That is a permanent decision made on the day you sign.

People talk about a company being MCS certified as if that is the whole story. It is one of three separate things the scheme certifies, and you need all three to line up.
- Products. MCS Product Standards set requirements for performance, testing, technical documentation and factory production management. A certified installation has to use certified products.
- Installation teams. MCS Installation Standards define how a certified installation team designs and installs a system.
- Installations. The individual job on your roof gets its own certificate, with its own number, registered to your address.
This layer of certification is not carried out by MCS itself. It is done by certification bodies accredited by UKAS, the United Kingdom Accreditation Service. MCS is not a government department
It was established by the UK Government in 2006 but has been independent since 2018, overseen by the MCS Foundation charity and run on a profit for purpose basis with surpluses reinvested in the sector. It is based in Daresbury, Cheshire. More than 2.5 million MCS certified systems are now installed in UK homes and small businesses.
Why the Smart Export Guarantee needs it
The Smart Export Guarantee, or SEG, pays small scale generators for electricity exported to the grid. Ofgem's eligible technologies are solar PV, wind, micro-CHP, hydro and anaerobic digestion, up to 5MW of total installed capacity, located in Great Britain. Micro-CHP is capped at 50kW.

Suppliers set their own rate, contract length and terms. The single floor Ofgem imposes is that an SEG tariff rate must always be above zero. Payments are worked out from export meter readings, and the export has to be measured by a meter capable of half hourly readings. Licensed suppliers with 150,000 or more domestic customers must offer at least one SEG tariff; smaller ones may do so voluntarily.
The certification link sits in the eligibility rules. For solar PV and wind at 50kW or below, the installation must have a valid MCS certificate or equivalent certification before a supplier will put you on an SEG tariff. That is why the certificate matters at resale too: the next owner inherits the export arrangement only if the paperwork exists.
There is one recognised alternative
Flexi-Orb, the Flexible Energy Oversight Registration Body, runs an installation standards scheme for solar PV, batteries and EV chargers and is recognised for SEG eligibility as an MCS equivalent, including by Octopus Energy. It reports UKAS recognition to ISO 17067:2013. MCS remains the only route to some government backed grants, the Boiler Upgrade Scheme among them.
You cannot add MCS afterwards
This is the single most expensive misunderstanding in the market. An installation cannot be certified retrospectively. If the work was done by a company that was not certified for that technology at the time, there is generally no route to bring the system into SEG later through the original path. The panels still generate, you still save on the electricity you use yourself, but the export side is closed.
The same logic applies to grants. MCS certification is a requirement for accessing many UK government incentives, including the Boiler Upgrade Scheme, ECO4, and the Home Energy Scotland grant and loan. ECO4 is set to end on 31 December 2026.

MCS consulted from 2023 on fundamental changes to its certification scheme for installation businesses, received UKAS recognition for the redeveloped scheme in January 2025, and certified companies are moving across through 2026 in a phased transition managed by their certification body. The first companies are already delivering work under it.

The financial protection change is the one to hold on to. Under the redeveloped scheme, an approved Financial Protection Product gives cover that begins when the contract is signed and continues for six years after the installation is completed. It holds if the installation business ceases trading, if it fails to resolve issues, or if the insurer itself ceases trading, with FSCS protection for regulated insurers and escalation to the Financial Ombudsman Service for insurance claim disputes. Behind the scenes, the scheme also renamed the roles you may see on an installation team's paperwork. The Licensee signs MCS's certification agreement, the Main Contact replaces the old Nominee, and the Technical Supervisor replaces the Nominated Technical Person. MCS also runs back office checks on financial performance, directors, public domain information, complaint history and legal proceedings.
What to do with this before you buy
Check certification for the exact technology
A firm certified for solar PV is not automatically certified for battery storage or heat pumps. Ask which technologies they hold and with which certification body.
Get the export route confirmed in writing
Ask the quoting company to state, in the quotation, that the installation will be MCS certified and that you will receive the certificate.
Diarise the certificate
Under the redeveloped scheme the certificate creation window is 30 days from commissioning. If nothing has arrived by then, chase it.
Register with a supplier
The certificate is what a supplier asks for when you apply for an SEG tariff, alongside your MPAN and meter details.

MCS questions, answered
Does MCS certification cost me anything as a homeowner?
You do not pay MCS directly. Certification is bought and held by the installation business through a UKAS accredited certification body, and the cost of certified working sits inside the installed price you are quoted. What you should expect to receive at no extra charge is the MCS certificate for your own installation.
Can I get SEG payments without an MCS certificate?
Only through a scheme accredited as equivalent. Flexi-Orb is recognised for SEG eligibility and is accepted by SEG suppliers including Octopus Energy. If the installation holds neither MCS nor a recognised equivalent, suppliers will not put it on an SEG tariff.
Can solar panels be MCS certified retrospectively?
No. An installation cannot be certified after the event, which is why the certification question has to be settled before the work starts rather than after. If you have inherited an uncertified system, focus on self consumption and battery storage value rather than export income.
How do I get my MCS certificate after the installation?

It should arrive by email or in your handover pack with a unique certificate number, your address and the system details. If it does not, contact us, then our certification body.
Is MCS the same as TrustMark?
No. TrustMark is the Government Endorsed Quality Scheme for work in and around the home, and it is the required route for government funded retrofit under schemes such as ECO4, using Certificates of Lodgement against PAS 2030 and PAS 2035. MCS is still needed for the renewable measure itself.
Do I need MCS if I never plan to export?
You are not legally required to have it, but you are giving up SEG income, the grant routes that depend on it, and a document many home insurers ask for when renewable technologies are installed at the property. It also affects what the system is worth when you sell.
