The hardware keeps running. The promise attached to it does not. GivEnergy's administration in April 2026 was the first time British homeowners met that distinction at scale, and it left a clear checklist behind for anyone who owns a battery.

The short answer
A home battery does not stop working when the company that made it stops trading. The unit on your wall is self contained. It carries on charging from your solar, carries on discharging into the house, and needs nobody's permission to do either. What ends is the paper. A manufacturer warranty is a contract with a company, so when that company ceases to exist, the cover ceases with it, and a fault that would have been a free replacement last year becomes a bill.
The exposure is future claims, not daily operation
After GivEnergy Ltd entered administration on 9 April 2026, the position set out by the UK Energy Storage Association was consistent: the hardware is self contained and keeps charging from solar and powering homes. The risk sits with future warranty claims, cloud features and firmware updates. Nothing switched off on the wall.
What happened to GivEnergy
GivEnergy was, for several years, the best known domestic battery brand in Britain. Its All in One unit gave 13.5 kWh of usable capacity at a full depth of discharge with 7.2 kW peak output, and its gateway delivered whole home backup with a 20 millisecond switchover, which was competitive kit sold in volume through a large installer network. On 9 April 2026 GivEnergy Ltd entered administration and ceased trading.
- Administration date 9 April 2026, with the company ceasing to trade and all 74 staff made redundant.
- Unsecured creditors were owed more than £17,000,000.
- The administrator's Statement of Proposals, filed in late May 2026, recorded no confirmed buyer for the business.
- No further hardware warranties are being honoured by GivEnergy Ltd.
- The UK Energy Storage Association issued guidance for owners, and the consistent instruction was to go back to your installation team in the first instance.
The warranty on paper had been one of the strongest in the market. Systems installed from 11 September 2023 carried 12 years with unlimited cycles and a 70% capacity retention guarantee. The Gateway 2 hardware carried a separate 15 year term excluding switchgear. Both were real commitments when they were written. Neither survives as a manufacturer promise anyone can now claim against, which is the whole lesson of the episode: a long warranty from a company that does not outlast it is worth less than a shorter one from a company that does.
What still works, and what you have lost

The three layers of cover, and which one failed
Most homeowners think of a battery as having one warranty. It has three separate layers, written by three different parties, and only one of them was destroyed in 2026. The manufacturer product warranty covers the hardware itself and is a claim against the factory. Your installation team's workmanship guarantee covers the fitting, the cabling and the commissioning, and is a claim against the company that came to your house. An insurance backed guarantee is designed to stand behind that workmanship guarantee if the installing company stops trading. A manufacturer failing takes out the first layer and leaves the other two intact.
Your contract is with whoever sold it to you
The installation was bought from a company, not from a factory. That matters when something goes wrong, because the practical route is the business you paid, not an administrator handling a queue of unsecured creditors already owed more than £17,000,000. What owners should check now
Find the original paperwork
Installation certificate, commissioning date, the warranty documents you were issued, and the MCS certificate. Photograph the lot and store it somewhere you will still find it in ten years. Without a commissioning date you cannot prove where you sit in any remaining term.
Confirm your installation team is still trading
They are the first port of call for a fault, for parts and for anything the manufacturer would previously have handled. If they are still trading, get their position on support in writing now, while nothing is broken.
Establish what the other two layers cover
Read the installation team's workmanship guarantee for its length and what it excludes, and check whether an insurance backed guarantee certificate was issued at the time. Those are separate documents from the manufacturer warranty and are unaffected by the manufacturer failing.
Record the system as it stands today
Note the model, the usable capacity, the firmware version and current performance, and screenshot the app while it still works. If the cloud service goes dark, that record is the only evidence of how the system was behaving.
Think twice before resetting anything
If remote support is uncertain, avoid any action that would need re-provisioning through a manufacturer service, such as an unnecessary factory reset or a speculative firmware change. Ask the installation team before, not after.
Budget on the hardware, not on the paper
Treat the remaining life of the battery as the asset you own and price a future module replacement into your own planning. Anything you get from a residual support route is upside rather than the plan.

This is the harder case, and it is why the insurance backed guarantee layer exists. Dig out the certificate, because it will name the insurer and set out what has to happen to make a claim, including any time limits. Where no such certificate was issued, the practical route is a competent local firm willing to work on the hardware. A battery module is not exotic, and a system that runs is worth maintaining even without a warranty behind it. How to reduce this risk on your next purchase
- Ask for the warranty document for the exact model on the quote, dated, rather than a link to a brand page or a comparison site.
- Ask how long the manufacturer has traded in the UK, who owns it, and where the support operation sits.
- Weigh the term against the counterparty. Tesla warrants the Powerwall 3 in the UK for 10 years at 80% retained capacity with unlimited cycles for self consumption, time of use and backup. Enphase publishes 15 years or 6,000 cycles on the IQ Battery 5P. Fox ESS publishes 12 years across its EQ range. The right question is not only which number is biggest, but which company is most likely to be there when you claim.
- Check every box separately. The battery, the inverter, the gateway and any EV charging module can each carry a different term, and the shortest one is your real exposure.
- Confirm the installation team's workmanship guarantee and any insurance backed guarantee in writing before you sign, because those are the layers that survive a manufacturer failing.
- Keep cycle limits in perspective. At one full cycle a day, a 6,000 cycle cap is more than sixteen years of use, so the years usually run out before the cycles do and the counterparty question matters more than the cycle count.

Will my GivEnergy battery stop working now the company has gone?
No. The hardware is self contained. It keeps charging from your solar, keeps powering the house and keeps running any schedule stored on the unit. The UK Energy Storage Association was explicit on this point after the April 2026 administration. What you have lost is the manufacturer's promise to fix or replace it, not the ability to use it.
Is the 12 year warranty still valid?
Not as a manufacturer promise. GivEnergy sold residential systems installed from 11 September 2023 with 12 years, unlimited cycles and a 70% retention guarantee, and no further hardware warranties are being honoured by GivEnergy Ltd. Any claim against the company itself sits in the administration alongside unsecured creditors owed more than £17,000,000.
Who do I contact if my battery develops a fault?
Your installation team, first. That was the consistent industry guidance after the administration, and it is also where your contract sits, because you bought the installation from that company rather than from the factory. If they are still trading they can source parts through the trade and their own workmanship guarantee may still be live.
What happens if the app and monitoring stop working?
Cloud features are the genuinely exposed part, because servers and support staff cost money that a company in administration is not spending. The battery itself does not need the app to charge and discharge. Screenshot your current settings and performance data now so you have a record if the service goes.
Should I replace the battery early?
There is no technical reason to. A battery with no warranty behind it is still a working asset with usable years left in it. The sensible approach is to price a future module replacement into your own planning rather than write off hardware that is doing its job today.
Does this mean home batteries are a risky buy?
It means the counterparty is part of the specification, not a footnote to it. A shorter warranty from a manufacturer with a long trading history and a real UK support operation can be worth more than a longer one from a company whose balance sheet you cannot see. Ask about the company as carefully as you ask about the kilowatt hours.
What is an insurance backed guarantee and does it help here?
It is cover designed to stand behind your installation team's workmanship guarantee if that team stops trading. It does not honour a failed manufacturer's product warranty, so it does not fill this particular gap, but it is the layer that protects the fitting side of the job and it is worth confirming you were issued a certificate.
