The inverter is the working heart of a solar system and the one major component you should plan to replace inside the panels' lifetime. That is not a defect, it is power electronics doing a hard job every daylight hour. What matters is knowing the planning figure, what your warranty actually runs to, and when a failing unit is a repair, a straight swap, or the moment to fit a hybrid and add a battery.

Solar panels are the reliable half of a solar system: no moving parts, 25 year plus service lives, output warranties running to 30 years. The inverter is the working half. It switches thousands of times a second, runs warm every daylight hour, and lives in a loft or garage that swings from freezing to baking. The Energy Saving Trust's planning figure is that a solar inverter needs replacing after around 12 years, and building that into your sums from day one turns a mid-life surprise into a scheduled, affordable event.
Why the inverter wears out before the panels
A panel is a sealed slab of silicon and glass doing a passive job. An inverter is dense power electronics, switching direct current into grid-synchronised alternating current all day, shedding waste heat as it goes. Heat is the enemy of electrolytic capacitors and switching components, so a unit mounted in a cool, ventilated spot tends to see out its warranty with room to spare, while the same unit in a sealed, south-facing loft works closer to its thermal limits every summer afternoon.
The honest planning figure
Panels: 25 years or more. String inverter: plan for a replacement at around 12 years, per the Energy Saving Trust. If your system is approaching its second decade on the original inverter, you are ahead of the curve, not overdue a panic.
What warranties actually run to
The spread is wide, and the differences are worth money. The Energy Saving Trust puts the minimum at five years, and many manufacturers double that to ten free of charge if the unit is registered online after installation, a ten-minute job your installation team may or may not have done. Premium string brands ship with around 12 years as standard. Paid extensions reach 15 or 20 years on most major brands.
- Check the registration. If your inverter's free extension needed an online registration and nobody did it, some manufacturers accept late registration within a window. Find the serial number and check before assuming the shorter term.
- Warranty is not lifespan. A five year warranty does not mean a five year machine, any more than a three year car warranty means a three year car. It marks who pays, not when it fails.
- Module-level kit is different. Microinverters and panel-level optimisers carry 25 year warranties, matching the panels. Systems built that way have effectively designed out the mid-life swap, which is part of their upfront premium.
The extension maths, per the Energy Saving Trust
A 15 year extended warranty can cost almost as much as a replacement inverter. Before buying one, price the extension against the swap itself and remember that a replacement in year 12 buys newer, more efficient hardware, while the extension only insures the old unit.
The signs an inverter is on its way out
- Falling generation with no other explanation. Compare like-for-like months across years; a steady slide that outpaces normal panel degradation points at conversion, not generation.
- Fault codes and restarts. Occasional grid-related trips are normal; a unit that drops out on every warm afternoon is derating or failing.
- Noise and heat. A new buzz, a cooling fan that never stops, or a unit too hot to rest a hand near is telling you something.
- A dead display with live panels. Most inverters can warn you by email through their online monitoring if the system fails; if yours has monitoring, switch the alerts on today, it is free.
Anything beyond reading the display and the generation meter belongs to an MCS-certified professional. DC from a live array does not switch off when the inverter does, and the isolators either side of it are not homeowner territory.
Repair, replace, or upgrade: the decision when it fails
Inside warranty: claim, do not pay
A genuine fault inside the warranty term is the manufacturer's problem. Your installation team, or the manufacturer directly if the team has gone, handles the swap. Keep the commissioning record and MCS certificate to hand; the serial number does the talking.
Out of warranty, system under ten years old: like-for-like swap
A straight replacement runs roughly £700 to £2,000 fitted, with brand, size and access driving the spread. The array stays, the paperwork is light, and you restart the warranty clock on the new unit.
Out of warranty, thinking about a battery: go hybrid
A hybrid inverter costs about £400 to £600 more than like-for-like and manages panels and a battery from one box. If storage is anywhere in your plans, this is the moment: paying for the same installation labour twice is the expensive way to arrive at the same system.
System from the early 2010s: run the bigger sum
An original inverter on a 2012 array is close to the line anyway. Price the inverter swap against a modern replacement system, because panel prices per watt have fallen far enough that whole-system arithmetic sometimes wins, and a new install restarts every warranty at once.
What replacement actually involves
For a like-for-like swap: a survey of the existing array's electrical configuration, matching a new unit to the string voltage and current windows, a morning's installation with the array isolated, then commissioning and updated paperwork. G98 notification covers most domestic swaps at or under 16 amps per phase; your installation team files it. Expect the old unit's mounting holes not to line up with the new one, and expect the electrician to test the DC side properly while everything is open, which is exactly what you want.

Individual units beat that figure regularly, and a hot, cramped or dusty mounting spot shortens it. Microinverters and panel-level optimisers are engineered and warranted for the full panel lifetime, typically 25 years, which is part of what you pay their premium for.
Is it worth extending a solar inverter warranty?
Sometimes, and the Energy Saving Trust's caution is the right frame: a long extension can cost almost as much as a replacement inverter, so price both before deciding. A cheap registration-based extension, such as a free doubling from 5 to 10 years, is always worth the ten minutes. A paid extension to 15 or 20 years needs comparing against simply keeping that money for the eventual swap.
Can I replace just the inverter and keep my panels?
Usually, yes. Panels that are generating to specification do not care what converts their DC. The new unit must be matched to the array's voltage and current windows, which is design work rather than a like-for-like shop, and it is the natural moment to consider a hybrid inverter so a battery can be added without paying for the same labour twice.
Does replacing an inverter affect my SEG or FiT payments?
SEG, no: payments follow your export meter readings, not the hardware. Feed-in Tariff systems need more care, because the FiT registration records the installation; like-for-like replacement is routine, but confirm the paperwork with your FiT licensee in writing before changing capacity. Keep the MCS certificate and the installation team's commissioning record either way.
