Cornwall Council's Building Stone Guide describes a building stock that draws heavily on local granite and slate, giving Cornish buildings their character, including scantle slating, a still-practised technique of slate hung on timber pegs over lime mortar, graded larger at the eaves to smaller at the ridge, that can last more than a century. With 288,262 dwellings recorded as of April 2022 and 88.6% privately owned or rented, most of that stone-and-slate stock sits in private hands, so panel counts depend on the roof's own pitch and condition.
