Local detail for Cornwall

Cornwall Council's Building Stone Guide describes a building stock that draws heavily on local granite and slate, giving Cornish buildings their character, including scantle slating, a still-practised technique of slate hung on timber pegs over lime mortar, graded larger at the eaves to smaller at the ridge, that can last more than a century. With 288,262 dwellings recorded as of April 2022 and 88.6% privately owned or rented, most of that stone-and-slate stock sits in private hands, so panel counts depend on the roof's own pitch and condition.

Cornwall sits in National Grid Electricity Distribution territory, on its South West licence; its own published Guaranteed Standard is 45 working days for a generation quotation, with a complete application acknowledged within 10 working days. Cornwall Council is the sole planning authority for the whole county, a unitary structure in place since 2009, unlike the district split in Kent or Hampshire; its own guidance confirms ground-mounted solar on Cornwall National Landscape land, covering around a third of the county, can need approval, while roof-mounted domestic solar stays unaffected.

Cornwall Council was one of the first UK councils to declare a climate emergency, doing so on 22 January 2019, though its cabinet has since reset the countywide net zero target from 2030 to 2045, aligned with national UK targets, while the council's own operations still aim for a 70% cut by 2030. Cornwall Housing has separately fitted more than 2MW of solar panels on tenants' homes, part-funded by the council and national grant programmes, giving residents free electricity and lower bills.

There is no district or borough split, unlike Kent, Hampshire or Dorset.
