Local detail for Hampshire

Hampshire's housing spans two contrasting patterns: in the New Forest, villages such as Lyndhurst, Brockenhurst, Burley and Beaulieu retain older, small-scale centres, while Basingstoke was rapidly expanded from the late 1960s as London overspill, growing from around 25,000 people after the war to more than 52,000 by 1971, with large purpose-built estates such as Chineham, Popley, Winklebury and Brighton Hill added around the original town, so roof form varies enormously between the county's historic villages and its planned post-war towns.

Hampshire sits in SSEN territory, on its Southern Electric Power Distribution licence; SSEN's own G99 Fast Track aims to reply within 10 working days for eligible schemes, well inside the 45 working day industry standard. Eleven district and borough councils handle most planning applications, including household solar, while Hampshire County Council leads on strategic, minerals and waste planning; inside the New Forest National Park, the park authority confirms permitted development rights are more restricted, so some solar installations there need planning permission not needed elsewhere in the county.

Hampshire County Council's Climate Change Strategy targets carbon neutrality for the council by 2050, alongside building resilience to a two-degree temperature rise. Under the government's Public Sector Decarbonisation Scheme, the council fitted solar panels across 258 of its own corporate and school buildings between January 2021 and April 2022, more than 13,000 panels with a combined 5.969MW of capacity, at a cost of £6.75 million.
