Hampshire's housing spans two contrasting patterns: in the New Forest, villages such as Lyndhurst, Brockenhurst, Burley and Beaulieu retain older, small-scale centres, while Basingstoke was rapidly expanded from the late 1960s as London overspill, growing from around 25,000 people after the war to more than 52,000 by 1971, with large purpose-built estates such as Chineham, Popley, Winklebury and Brighton Hill added around the original town, so roof form varies enormously between the county's historic villages and its planned post-war towns.
