How Denbighshire compares

Denbighshire ranks joint 47th of the 85 counties we track for solar yield. Self use does the heavy lifting here: of the £834 year one benefit on a typical 12 panel system, £247 comes from replacing 26.32p imports with your own generation, which is why battery sizing matters more than panel count.

Treat these as calibration rather than a quote. The calculator below opens on Denbighshire's own PVGIS yield and prices a 12 panel system at £6,360 installed before any battery; your free design call reworks every number for your roof.

Connecting solar to the Denbighshire network

SP Energy Networks is the distribution network operator (DNO) for Denbighshire, running its North Wales, Merseyside and Cheshire licence area.

What decides the paperwork is the inverter and battery output, not the number of panels. Up to 3.68kW per phase, a system follows G98: SP Energy Networks is notified within 28 days of commissioning and nothing has to be approved first.

Anything bigger is a G99 case and is applied for first. Ofgem's guaranteed standard for a low voltage generation connection quotation is 45 working days, with £80 paid for each working day late, and it binds SP Energy Networks as it does every network operator.

Heat pumps and EV charging in Denbighshire

A heat pump in Denbighshire

Solar and a heat pump pull in opposite directions through the year: Denbighshire's roofs make 900 kWh from November to February on a 12-panel system, and 2,840 kWh from May to August. The heating season leans on the grid, so off-peak rates do the heavy lifting.

The Boiler Upgrade Scheme, open in England and Wales, takes £7,500 off an air source or ground source heat pump, or £2,500 off an air-to-air unit. Homes on oil or LPG with no mains gas get £1,500 more until March 2027 (gov.uk, checked 28 September 2026).

Charging an EV in Denbighshire

From April to September, 70% of a Denbighshire roof's yearly output arrives, peaking at about 760 kWh in May on 12 panels. A car parked at home in daylight can soak up what the house, at around 70 kWh of daytime use that month, cannot.

If you rent, or own a flat, and have private off-street parking, the government chargepoint grant covers 75% of the cost, capped at £500 a socket, until 31 March 2027 (gov.uk, checked 28 September 2026). The calculator above prices a 7.4kW smart charger from £1,100 installed.

FAQs

Denbighshire solar questions

What could a roof in Denbighshire generate?

PVGIS puts a roof in Denbighshire at 917 kWh per kWp a year, 2.51 peak sun hours a day averaged across the seasons. A 12-panel, 6.36 kWp system makes about 5,830 kWh a year, most of it between April and September.

What would 12 solar panels cost in Denbighshire?

£6,360 for 12 panels (6.36 kWp), the same as in every other place we cover, because solar is priced at £1,000 per kWp installed rather than by area. A battery adds its own installed price on top. Where Denbighshire differs is output: about 5,830 kWh a year from that system.

Do I need permission from the DNO for solar in Denbighshire?

Usually not in advance. SP Energy Networks, the network operator for Denbighshire, only needs a G98 notification within 28 days of commissioning for systems up to 3.68kW per phase. Bigger inverter or battery outputs need G99 approval first. Ofgem's guaranteed standard for a low voltage generation connection quotation is 45 working days, with £80 paid for each working day late, and it binds SP Energy Networks as it does every network operator. "See our DNO explainer.

How much would export pay on a system in Denbighshire?

It is exported. With typical use and no battery, about 4,895 kWh of the 5,830 kWh a 12-panel system makes in Denbighshire goes to the grid, around £587 a year at 12p. A battery keeps more of it for the evening; the export rates table shows what suppliers pay.

Do solar panels work in winter in Denbighshire?

Yes, at a lower level. PVGIS gives Denbighshire 26.3 kWh per kWp in December and 30 in January, so a 12-panel system makes about 170 kWh and 190 kWh in those months, against 760 kWh in May. Winter output mostly covers daytime use rather than exporting.
