Our GB average is 925 kWh per kWp a year, the mean of the 85 county PVGIS estimates we publish; at 848, Caithness is 8% below it.
How Caithness compares
Caithness ranks 63rd of the 85 counties we track for solar yield. Self use does the heavy lifting here: of the £781 year one benefit on a typical 12 panel system, £247 comes from replacing 26.32p imports with your own generation, which is why battery sizing matters more than panel count.
Every figure here assumes a clear, south-facing roof at 35 degrees in the middle of Caithness. Yours will differ; the calculator below lets you test panels, batteries and export rates first.
The charger is in the installed price but left out of payback: charging savings depend on your mileage and tariff, which the design call models properly.

Generation from PVGIS v5.2 (European Commission JRC, SARAH3), retrieved August 2026 for a representative point in Caithness (58.4284, -3.467), assuming 1 kWp, 14% system loss, 35 degree pitch, due south. Import valued at 26.32p/kWh (Ofgem price cap average, Oct to Dec 2026); off-peak charging at 8.5p/kWh where used (a supplier's published off-peak rate, checked September 2026); export at the scenario you pick, from the dated tariff table. Prices are installed pricing, August 2026, standard installations; 530W LONGi panels at £1,000 per kWp. Estimates for illustration, not a quote: your free design call prices your actual roof.
Connecting solar to the Caithness network
Scottish and Southern Electricity Networks (SSEN) is the distribution network operator (DNO) for Caithness, running its North Scotland licence area.
Most home systems stay within 3.68kW per phase of inverter output, which puts them on G98, a notification to SSEN within 28 days of switch-on. Panel count does not decide it; the inverter and any battery do.
A bigger inverter or battery output needs a G99 application in advance. SSEN says it can take up to 45 working days to issue a quotation for a generation connection above 3.68kW per phase and up to 50kW.

Beyond the panels: heating and car charging in Caithness
A heat pump in Caithness
Solar and a heat pump pull in opposite directions through the year: Caithness' roofs make 630 kWh from November to February on a 12-panel system, and 2,800 kWh from May to August. The heating season leans on the grid, so off-peak rates do the heavy lifting.
Scottish homes apply through Home Energy Scotland rather than the Boiler Upgrade Scheme: up to £7,500 in grant for a heat pump, up to £7,500 more as an optional interest-free loan, and a £1,500 uplift for rural and island homes (checked 28 September 2026).
Charging an EV in Caithness
From April to September, 74% of a Caithness roof's yearly output arrives, peaking at about 780 kWh in May on 12 panels. A car parked at home in daylight can soak up what the house, at around 70 kWh of daytime use that month, cannot.
Renters and flat owners with private off-street parking can get 75% off a chargepoint and its installation, up to £500 per socket, until 31 March 2027 (gov.uk, checked 28 September 2026). The calculator above adds a 7.4kW smart charger from £1,100 installed.

Solar in Caithness: your questions answered
What could a roof in Caithness generate?
PVGIS puts a roof in Caithness at 848 kWh per kWp a year, 2.32 peak sun hours a day averaged across the seasons. A 12-panel, 6.36 kWp system makes about 5,390 kWh a year, most of it between April and September.
How much are solar panels in Caithness?
The price does not move by postcode. At £1,000 per kWp installed, 12 panels (6.36 kWp) come to £6,360 in Caithness before a battery. What Caithness changes is the return, about 5,390 kWh a year from that system, and your design call prices your actual roof.
Do I need permission from the DNO for solar in Caithness?
Usually not in advance. SSEN, the network operator for Caithness, only needs a G98 notification within 28 days of commissioning for systems up to 3.68kW per phase. Bigger inverter or battery outputs need G99 approval first. SSEN says it can take up to 45 working days to issue a quotation for a generation connection above 3.68kW per phase and up to 50kW. "See our DNO explainer.
How much can I earn from exporting solar in Caithness?
With typical use and no battery, a 12-panel system in Caithness exports about 4,457 kWh a year. At 12p per kWh that is roughly £535; a supplier paying more, or a battery that keeps more for the evening, changes the figure. See the export rates table.
Do solar panels work in winter in Caithness?
Yes, at a lower level. PVGIS gives Caithness 13.8 kWh per kWp in December and 17.9 in January, so a 12-panel system makes about 90 kWh and 110 kWh in those months, against 780 kWh in May. Winter output mostly covers daytime use rather than exporting.
