Kent County Council's own 2021 Census bulletin shows houses and bungalows dominating at 80.4% of households, with semi-detached the largest single category at 31.4%, close to the England and Wales figure, detached homes at 25.4% and terraces at 23.5%, both above the regional average. Purpose-built flats make up 14.0%, and the county's dwelling stock grew by 59,841 homes, or 9.4%, between the 2011 and 2021 censuses, so a fair share of Kent's roofs are on relatively new-build homes rather than older stock.

Kent sits in UK Power Networks territory, on its South Eastern Power Networks licence; the 45 working day industry standard applies to a standard low voltage generation quotation, with most single home systems using the quicker 28-day G98 route instead. Kent's twelve district and borough councils decide most planning applications, including household solar, while Kent County Council leads on strategic, minerals and waste planning; Kent Downs National Landscape, the renamed AONB, treats rooftop solar on existing buildings as generally compatible, unlike ground-mounted solar farms, which it usually resists.

Cleve Hill Solar Park, near Graveney between Faversham and Whitstable, is a 373MW solar farm with more than 550,000 panels plus battery storage, fully operational since summer 2025 and generating enough for more than 102,000 homes. UK Power Networks has also installed what it calls the UK's first smart electricity substation in Maidstone, using AI to free up to 50% more network capacity for new connections, solar included, across the South East.
