What a roof in Surrey can generate

From 36.5 kWh per kWp in December to 126.7 in July: a roof in Surrey makes 3.5 times as much in its best month as in its darkest, and 1,023 kWh per kWp across the year.

How Surrey compares

Surrey ranks 14th of the 85 counties we track for solar yield, which puts export income near the top of the country. On the 12p scenario a 12 panel system here sends about 5,570 kWh to the grid a year on top of the £247 it saves you directly, so oversizing the array is usually the right call.

Treat these as calibration rather than a quote. The calculator below opens on Surrey's own PVGIS yield and prices a 12 panel system at £6,360 installed before any battery; your free design call reworks every number for your roof.

Connecting solar to the Surrey network

On NESO's licence-area map, the middle of Surrey falls in South East England, which UK Power Networks operates.

What decides the paperwork is the inverter and battery output, not the number of panels. Up to 3.68kW per phase, a system follows G98: UK Power Networks is notified within 28 days of commissioning and nothing has to be approved first.

Anything bigger is a G99 case and is applied for first. Ofgem's guaranteed standard for a low voltage generation connection quotation is 45 working days, with £80 paid for each working day late, and it binds UK Power Networks as it does every network operator.

Parts of Surrey are on a different network: some of its towns are served by SSEN. Each town page names its own operator, worked out from that town's own location.

Heat pumps and EV charging in Surrey

A heat pump in Surrey

Solar and a heat pump pull in opposite directions through the year: Surrey's roofs make 1,100 kWh from November to February on a 12-panel system, and 3,080 kWh from May to August. The heating season leans on the grid, so off-peak rates do the heavy lifting.

Grant support in England comes from the Boiler Upgrade Scheme: £7,500 for an air source or ground source heat pump, £2,500 for air-to-air, and an extra £1,500 until March 2027 where the home is heated by oil or LPG off the gas grid (gov.uk, checked 28 September 2026).

Charging an EV in Surrey

From April to September, 68% of a Surrey roof's yearly output arrives, peaking at about 810 kWh in July on 12 panels. A car parked at home in daylight can soak up what the house, at around 70 kWh of daytime use that month, cannot.

If you rent, or own a flat, and have private off-street parking, the government chargepoint grant covers 75% of the cost, capped at £500 a socket, until 31 March 2027 (gov.uk, checked 28 September 2026). The calculator above prices a 7.4kW smart charger from £1,100 installed.

FAQs

Solar in Surrey: your questions answered

What could a roof in Surrey generate?

PVGIS puts a roof in Surrey at 1,023 kWh per kWp a year, 2.80 peak sun hours a day averaged across the seasons. A 12-panel, 6.36 kWp system makes about 6,510 kWh a year, most of it between April and September.

How much are solar panels in Surrey?

The price does not move by postcode. At £1,000 per kWp installed, 12 panels (6.36 kWp) come to £6,360 in Surrey before a battery. What Surrey changes is the return, about 6,510 kWh a year from that system, and your design call prices your actual roof.

Do I need permission from the DNO for solar in Surrey?

Usually not in advance. UK Power Networks, the network operator for the centre of Surrey, only needs a G98 notification within 28 days of commissioning for systems up to 3.68kW per phase. Bigger inverter or battery outputs need G99 approval first. Ofgem's guaranteed standard for a low voltage generation connection quotation is 45 working days, with £80 paid for each working day late, and it binds UK Power Networks as it does every network operator. "See our DNO explainer.

How much can I earn from exporting solar in Surrey?

With typical use and no battery, a 12-panel system in Surrey exports about 5,570 kWh a year. At 12p per kWh that is roughly £668; a supplier paying more, or a battery that keeps more for the evening, changes the figure. See the export rates table.

Do solar panels work in winter in Surrey?

Yes, at a lower level. PVGIS gives Surrey 36.5 kWh per kWp in December and 38.6 in January, so a 12-panel system makes about 230 kWh and 250 kWh in those months, against 810 kWh in July. Winter output mostly covers daytime use rather than exporting.
