How Ryde compares
Small towns rarely get published solar figures, so here are the numbers for Ryde. It is one of 45 Hampshire towns we track, and it ranks 6th of 45 for solar yield, a town of 24,059 people in the House of Commons Library settlement data. PVGIS gives its roofs 1,136 kWh per kWp a year, 3.11 peak sun hours a day averaged across the seasons, and the standard 12 panel model turns that into £1,002 of year one benefit, £247 of it from your own generation and £755 from export at 12p.
These are starting numbers, not a quote. The calculator below opens on Ryde's own PVGIS figure; change the panels, the battery or the export rate and it reruns. The design call replaces every assumption with your roof and your bills.
Isle of Wight is the planning authority covering Ryde, which the House of Commons Library classes as a small town.
The charger is in the installed price but left out of payback: charging savings depend on your mileage and tariff, which the design call models properly.

Who runs the grid in Ryde
Scottish and Southern Electricity Networks (SSEN) owns and runs the local electricity network in Ryde, as part of its Southern England licence area.
For a typical home the paperwork is light: a system of up to 3.68kW per phase goes through G98, which means SSEN is notified within 28 days of switch-on rather than asked beforehand.
A bigger inverter or battery output needs a G99 application in advance. SSEN says it can take up to 45 working days to issue a quotation for a generation connection above 3.68kW per phase and up to 50kW.

Adding a heat pump or an EV charger in Ryde
A heat pump in Ryde
A heat pump does most of its work from November to February. Over those four months, 12 panels in Ryde make about 1,230 kWh, against 3,420 kWh from May to August, so winter heating runs mostly on grid electricity and the tariff matters more than the roof.
Grant support in England comes from the Boiler Upgrade Scheme: £7,500 for an air source or ground source heat pump, £2,500 for air-to-air, and an extra £1,500 until March 2027 where the home is heated by oil or LPG off the gas grid (gov.uk, checked 28 September 2026).
Charging an EV in Ryde
A 12-panel roof in Ryde makes about 890 kWh in July. A typical home uses around 70 kWh of that in daylight (the calculator's typical-use settings), which leaves most of the month's output for an EV or for export.
If you rent, or own a flat, and have private off-street parking, the government chargepoint grant covers 75% of the cost, capped at £500 a socket, until 31 March 2027 (gov.uk, checked 28 September 2026). The calculator above prices a 7.4kW smart charger from £1,100 installed.

Ryde solar questions
What does a solar panel system produce in Ryde?
Each kWp of panels in Ryde makes 1,136 kWh a year on PVGIS figures, so a typical 12-panel system produces around 7,220 kWh, from about 250 kWh in December up to 890 kWh in July.
How much are solar panels in Ryde?
The price does not move by postcode. At £1,000 per kWp installed, 12 panels (6.36 kWp) come to £6,360 in Ryde before a battery. What Ryde changes is the return, about 7,220 kWh a year from that system, and your design call prices your actual roof.
Would a system in Ryde need approval from the network operator?
Ryde is on Scottish and Southern Electricity Networks' network (Southern England licence area). Systems up to 3.68kW per phase of inverter output follow G98: SSEN is notified within 28 days of commissioning, with no approval needed first. Anything larger needs a G99 application before installation. SSEN says it can take up to 45 working days to issue a quotation for a generation connection above 3.68kW per phase and up to 50kW. Our G98 vs G99 guide explains both routes.
How much can I earn from exporting solar in Ryde?
With typical use and no battery, a 12-panel system in Ryde exports about 6,288 kWh a year. At 12p per kWh that is roughly £755; a supplier paying more, or a battery that keeps more for the evening, changes the figure. See the export rates table.
Is solar worth it in Ryde in winter?
It works, but the year is lopsided. 68% of a Ryde roof's output lands between April and September; the four months from November to February give about 1,230 kWh on a 12-panel system. Payback is worked out on the whole year, not the winter.
How Ryde compares with its neighbours
Same satellite dataset, same assumptions, so the differences are real geography rather than modelling noise.
| Town | kWh per kWp a year | vs Ryde |
|---|---|---|
| Ryde | 1,136 | this town |
| Sandown | 1,138 | +2 kWh |
| East Cowes | 1,112 | −24 kWh |
| Gosport | 1,116 | −20 kWh |
| Newport (Isle of Wight) | 1,150 | +14 kWh |
| Shanklin | 1,138 | +2 kWh |
| Lee-on-the-Solent | 1,104 | −32 kWh |
Each row is a PVGIS v5.2 run at that town's centre with the same settings. Treat gaps of a few kWh as noise and gaps over about 30 kWh per kWp as real differences in sunshine.
