How much a Rugby roof makes, month by month

From 34.3 kWh per kWp in December to 122.9 in July: a roof in Rugby makes 3.6 times as much in its best month as in its darkest, and 1,000 kWh per kWp across the year.

How Rugby compares

Rugby is one of 19 Warwickshire towns we track, and it ranks joint 4th of 19 for solar yield. The House of Commons Library settlement data classes it as a large town of 82,588 people. At 1,000 kWh per kWp a year, a typical 12 panel system here pays for itself in around 7.1 years on the 12p scenario: £897 of year one benefit against £6,360 installed, £247 of that benefit from cutting 26.32p imports with your own generation.

Every figure here assumes a clear, south-facing roof at 35 degrees. Yours will differ, which is what the free design call is for; until then, the calculator below tests panels, batteries and export rates on Rugby's own yield.

Rugby is its own local planning authority area, and its House of Commons Library settlement class is large town.

Local grid

The network operator for Rugby

On NESO's licence-area map, Rugby is in East Midlands, which National Grid Electricity Distribution (NGED) operates. That makes NGED the network operator for any system fitted here.

Below 3.68kW per phase of inverter and battery output, the G98 route applies: the installation is notified to NGED within 28 days of commissioning, with no prior approval.

Above that, G99 means applying before the work is booked. NGED's guaranteed standards give 45 working days for a low voltage generation quotation, with £80 paid for each working day late.

Sources: NESO DNO licence areas (3 May 2024); NGED, guaranteed standards of performance table, checked 25 September 2026. G98 vs G99, explained.

Beyond solar

Beyond the panels: heating and car charging in Rugby

A heat pump in Rugby

Heating demand peaks when solar is weakest. In Rugby, a 12-panel system makes about 220 kWh in December and 230 kWh in January, a fraction of its 780 kWh in July, which is why a heat pump here is costed on its tariff first.

The Boiler Upgrade Scheme, open in England and Wales, takes £7,500 off an air source or ground source heat pump, or £2,500 off an air-to-air unit. Homes on oil or LPG with no mains gas get £1,500 more until March 2027 (gov.uk, checked 28 September 2026).

How heat pumps work

Charging an EV in Rugby

Rugby's July output, about 780 kWh from 12 panels, is several times the 70 kWh or so a typical home uses in daylight that month on our calculator's settings. Daytime charging turns that surplus into miles.

Renters and flat owners with private off-street parking can get 75% off a chargepoint and its installation, up to £500 per socket, until 31 March 2027 (gov.uk, checked 28 September 2026). The calculator above adds a 7.4kW smart charger from £1,100 installed.

FAQs

Common questions about solar in Rugby

How much electricity do solar panels make in Rugby?

About 6,360 kWh a year from 12 panels (6.36 kWp), on PVGIS satellite data for Rugby: 1,000 kWh per kWp, or 2.74 peak sun hours a day on average. July is the strongest month, at about 780 kWh.

Is solar more expensive in Rugby?

Prices on this site are the same everywhere: £1,000 per kWp installed, which puts a 12-panel system at £6,360 in Rugby, and a Duracell Dura16 installed with solar at £4,450 on top. The local part is generation, about 6,360 kWh a year here, which is what drives payback.

Which DNO covers Rugby, and what does it need from me?

National Grid Electricity Distribution (NGED) covers Rugby. A home system of up to 3.68kW per phase is notified to NGED within 28 days of commissioning under G98, and nothing waits on approval. Larger outputs need a G99 application before work starts. NGED's guaranteed standards give 45 working days for a low voltage generation quotation, with £80 paid for each working day late.

What could I earn from exporting in Rugby?

On the 12p export scenario, a 12-panel system in Rugby sends about 5,423 kWh a year to the grid, worth around £651. The export rates table compares what each supplier pays.

How much solar does Rugby get in December?

December is the low point: about 220 kWh from a 12-panel system in Rugby, on PVGIS data, rising to 780 kWh in July. From November to February the same system makes about 1,070 kWh in total, which is why a battery charged off-peak does more of the work in winter.

How Rugby compares with its neighbours

Same satellite dataset, same assumptions, so the differences are real geography rather than modelling noise.

TownkWh per kWp a yearvs Rugby
Rugby1,000this town
Lutterworth991−9 kWh
Daventry1,012+12 kWh
Southam1,005+5 kWh
Broughton Astley991−9 kWh
Coventry985−15 kWh
Bedworth983−17 kWh

Each row is a PVGIS v5.2 run at that town's centre with the same settings. Treat gaps of a few kWh as noise and gaps over about 30 kWh per kWp as real differences in sunshine.
