Southampton's Local Plan describes the city's housing as typically higher density and smaller than in many other areas, with a higher than average share of private rented homes, terraces and properties built before 1919. Much of the city centre was rebuilt in the mid-twentieth century after wartime bomb damage, so a Southampton roof is as likely to sit on a rebuilt mid-century terrace as on a pre-1919 original, and the two can behave quite differently for shading and pitch.
